FAQs
Is it worth it to get a doula?
Absolutely! Pregnant moms who hire a doula are more likely to have vaginal births and less likely to need pain medication, epidurals, birth trauma, forceps, and cesarean births according to Rebecca Dekker Ph.D. on evidencebasedbirth.com
Are doulas licensed?
Yes, doulas can be certified but they are also able to practice without certification.
Are doulas covered by insurance?
Some insurances will cover doulas, but not all. You may also check with your insurance to see if they will cover half of the cost of a doula.
Are doulas covered by Medicaid?
Yes! They will reimburse up to four prenatal visits, support during labor and delivery, and postpartum visits.
Are doulas and midwives the same?
No. Midwives are medical professionals and their prime focus is to help deliver the baby. Doulas focus on the mother and offer physical, mental, and emotional support. Doulas are not medical professionals and cannot substitute midwives. Each has their own unique and important role.
Who do doulas work for?
Doulas mother the mother, and are also excellent support for partners who may get overwhelmed.
Are doulas allowed in the delivery room?
Yes. Some hospitals require proof of certification but not all. You should ask your care provider in advance.
Can doulas deliver babies?
No, we are not medical professionals.
Can doula check dilation?
No, but we can give an estimate by measuring how long, intense, and frequent contractions are.
How do doulas help?
Doulas help the mother with physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual support throughout her labor. Doulas also provide advocacy for mothers’ choice and informed decision-making.
When to call your doula:
Most doulas like to be called when you can no longer ignore your contractions. When things really take off, you’ll know! You should also notify doulas when you think early labor has begun, just so that they are in the loop. You can keep them updated accordingly.
